The Biggest Onshore Oil & Gas Find In Over 40 years, 25 miles From York

Rathlin Energy has breathed life into Britain’s dwindling energy reserves, by announcing the biggest onshore gas discovery for more than 40 years, just 25 miles away from York, making it Yorkshire’s latest gas discovery.

Its the largest onshore discovery since oil was discovered by British Gas at Bournemouth, Dorset in 1973.

Rathlin Energy states that the discovery being onshore reduces costs of development, which in turn boosts the economics considerably, as is located North East of the Easington Terminal (one of 6 main gas terminals in the UK), and can use the existing infrastructure.

Research shows on average, the UK uses 1.5 million barrels of oil and 7.7 billion cubic feet of gas, daily. Therefore, the latest Yorkshire discovery could ease the UK’s domestic production gap, due to the diminishing North Sea reserves.

The oil and gas industry have analysed that Rathlin Energy’s find could be worth £840 million. This figure is based on Rathlin Energy recovering at least 59 million barrels of oil and 266 billion cubic feet of gas.

The UK exploration activity last year fell to its lowest level since the 1960’s and 50n North Sea oil and gas fields could cease production with in 5 years.

1806 – Gas lighting was installed in cotton spinning mills by Samuel Clegg (Sowerby Bridge, Yorkshire) and William              Murdoch (Manchester)

1807 – Frederick Winsor demonstrated gas street lighting in Pall Mall, London.

1807 – London’s Golden Lane was lit by gas which was produced at a nearby brewery.

1814 – Frederick Accum wrote the first authoritative text book on gas manufacturing.

1817 – Samuel Clegg developed the gas meter.

1824 – Tate invented the telescopic gasholder.

1826 – James Sharp installed an experimental gas cooker at his house, in Northampton.

1855 – Robert Bunsen invented the Bunsen burner.

1856 – The first practical gas fire was produced by Pettit and Smith.

1870 – T S Lacey patented the first prepayment gas meter.

1887 – The glowing gas mantle was invented by Carl Auer.

1923 – Thermostatic controls on gas ovens were introduced.

1949 – Nationalisation of the gas industry.

1953 – Gas was first manufactured from oil, in reformer plants.

1964 – First shipment of natural gas from Algeria arrived in Britain.

1965 – North sea gas was discovered in the West Sole field.

1968 – Natural gas conversion programme starts at Burton on Trent.

1976 – Natural gas conversion programme completed.

1986 – Privatisation of the gas industry, creating British Gas plc.

1997 – British gas plc split into Centrica and BG Group.

First thing you need to do is go outside and from across the road, call the National Gas Helpline on 0800 111 999. This telephone number is free. Give the advisor as much information as possible (e.g. your name, address etc.) and listen to their advice.

A National Gas Helpline advisor will send a Gas Safe Engineer to your property to ensure everything is safe. Please stay outside your property and wait until the Gas Safe Engineer arrives.

The Gas Safe Engineer will go inside your property and make sure it is safe. After he/she has finished the full property inspection, they will let you when it is safe for your to go inside.

Do not enter the property.

While you are inside the property never, light a match/lighter (or any other kind of naked flame) smoke, use any mobile/electrical items/appliances or doorbells, as this could cause an explosion or fire.

DO

• Listen and follow the instructions given to you by the advisor.

NEVER

• Stay inside the property,
• Light a match/use a lighter (or any other kind of naked flame) in the property,
• Smoke,

SYMPTOMS

Gas gives off carbon monoxide fumes, so if you have been in a property and have been exposed you may start to feel unwell. Therefore, you experience any symptoms, you must go straight to the doctors/walk in centre or A&E to get checked out.

Remember it’s better to be safe than sorry!

Your doctor should examine you and ask if you are suffering from any of the following symptoms:
• Headache,
• Nausea,
• Dizziness,
• Fatigue,
• Breathing problems,
• Sore eyes or
• Sore throat.

PREVENTION

Faulty gas appliances or pipework, are the most common causes of gas leaks.

To make sure your appliances and pipework are safe to use, call a gas safe registered (CORGI PREVIOUSLY) engineer. The Gas Safe Register advises that appliances should be checked once every year or follow the safety instructions on the appliances.

As extra precautions you can also:
• install a Carbon monoxide detector in your property,
• obtain a Gas detector,
• always get appliances installed by a Gas Safe engineer.

In the past three years, the Gas Safe Register has stated that one in six homes inspected has a faulty gas appliance.

A gas leak can lead to fires, explosions and carbon monoxide poisoning if it isn’t dealt with.

REMEMBER:

• can be FATAL
